Does Blood In Cough Come From Throat Or Chest?

3 days ago something irraitated my throat and I coughed for about 10 minutes until I spit up blood. The next day my chest was sore and I spit up a little blood. The third day I felt a crackling in my chest and I coughed up like a small ball of blood. Today (day 4) my chest is sore and I just coughed up a dark thick string of blood. Then it felt like I threw up from my throat small amount of bright red blood. Now my throat is burning. Is the blood I'm coughing up coming from my throat or chest?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Cough is the effort of our body to remove foreign objects from our bodies, whether it is goods, viruses, dust or phlegm that is in the throat. The cough process involves the muscles in the chest, abdomen, and neck to produce strong pressure to remove the foreign object.

So if you have a cough, especially frequent and strong it can cause the chest pain because your muscles are contracting, so fatigue and it can cause pain in the chest, abdomen, and neck.

For the blood that comes out when you cough, it can also be caused by the pressure of your coughing that is so strong that it hurts your throat mucosa, not the blood from your chest. The characteristic of blood from the wound in the throat is fresh redness. For the amount of blood that comes out depends on the extent of the injured throat mucosa.

The first treatment you can do is gargling with warm salt water, and if indeed you are coughing, especially sputum you can drink lime juice to help thin the sputum so your cough is not too strong that can cause injury of the mucosa in your throat.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lili Sitanggang
