Does Breast Cancer Survivor And Autoimmune Disorder Can Lead To Nail Layering Off?

Good morning, Dr. I have 4 hand nail, and 5 toenails which began separating from the cuticle, layering off (and separating for the white part of the nail. This part splits, and the remainder of the nail becomes totally detatched, and comes off. I m a 15 yrs. breast cancer survivor, have an auto-immune disorder (pos. ANA). When my bones break, they become cystic and dissolve. I ve had 5 surgeries to correct a bothched bunion, resulting in external fixator rod (twice, the first did not consolidate), and ended up with a cadavar hip graft to replace the dissolved bone when my dr. tried to screw my big toe to the distal metatarsal. It dissolved, leaving me with no balance, and extensive further work. I ve had other work which needed to be redone due to my non consolidation and bony cyst formations. Is there any relation to my overall health issues to my current nail issues? What can be done? What should I ask my doctor? Thank you for your time in this issue of mine ! Sincerely, Debra McNeely

Hi,

Unfortunately your nail issues can very well be connected to these circumstances. Maybe you can ask your local GP or dermatologist if artificial finger and toe nails would be tolerated by you, given your many health issues. If yes, I would give the cosmetic solution a try. However only in a beauty salon with high hygiene standards!

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Marius Lazar, Dermatologist
