Hi,

Chronic mastoiditis can be a debilitating illness and as you have mentioned tends to linger on for years in some people. Surgery is what we call the GOLD STANDARD for treatment for this and that is what most patients end up having, as it sounds like you have dealt with surgery twice before. The only other real option that I know of is a long term and protracted course of IV antibiotics.

Mastoiditis is essentially a form of osteomyelitis (bone infection) and when surgery is not effective all that really can be done is to continue antibiotics for a long duration, usually weeks to months. There are reports of using other strategies like hyperbaric oxygen chambers and even a report I read about regarding radiotherapy to essentially kill the bacteria present but these are somewhat fringe and unconventional therapies and not well studied.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
