Does Consanguineous Marriage Lead To Birth Defects In The Baby?
Hello. My question is that I am in love with my first cousin and willing to marry her in future. The problem is that my dad isn't agreeing for this marriage due to First Cousin Issue i.e birth defects and genetic disorders.Where as this would be our first cousin marriage in my family background. What is the reason of these sorts of diseases? Is there any solution which I can count that there would be no defects on my baby or I need to test my blood samples so do she? Please guide me up I am very tensed these days.
hi, Thanks for writing to hcm. consanguineous marriages lead to stillbirths and high infant mortality rates and birth defects .There is an increased risk for recessive disorders because of the expression of autosomal recessive gene mutations inherited from a common ancestor. First cousins usually share 12.5% of their genes. If you are very much interested in marryng your first cousin then probably you will have to get regular ultrasonography tests done during early pregnancy to rule out any defects. Also consult medical geneticists regarding premarital and pre conceptional counselling. I hope this helped. Dr.Riyanka
