Does Consumption Of Levothyroxine In The First Trimester Cause Any Side Effects?
I'm 8 weeks pregnant with a TSH of 5.91. I was immeditaly prescribed 50 mcg levothyroxine. I am really worried about consequences, as I read that hypothyroidism can cause lower IQ etc. My doc said that I don't have to worry now, because in the 1st trimester the main risk is miscarriage. Is this true? Is my range really that abnormal? What number would count really high? How long does it take for this med to pull down the TSH to normal level? Thanks!
Hi. If you are detected to be hypothyroid during pregnancy you need to continue levothyroxine throughout pregnancy.also the levels rise during pregnancy and you need to maintain TSH levels upto 3-3.5 so, the dr. might ask you to repeat the test in all 3 trimesters. Your range is not that abnormal. the upper limit is upto 4.5. So, once you start the drug which is to be taken empty stomach, you can recheck the levels after min. 6 weeksand one more thing don't take the tablet on the day of your test. I hope by 6 weeks the levels will be normal. Take care . Thanks.
