Does Darker Face And Swollen Abdomen In A Diabetic Indicate Cushing Syndrome?

Hi doctor,my father is 67 year old,history of severe arthritis and he was on long term of herbs which i think may contain steroid.Now his face is darker,his abdomen getting bigger in size,though his limbs not showing that he puts on weight,he is just informed that he is diabetes.do you think he has cushing syndrome??can he be treated?

Hello! Steroids are indeed often present in 'herbal drugs' given for arthritis. Given the chronic nature of this disease, treatment too is taken for long periods and is generally unsupervised. Your father's central obesity( increased abdominal girth with disproportionately slim limbs) and the recent development of diabetes are typical of long term unregulated steroid use. With appropriate treatment improvement is possible. Do consult an endocrinologist and a rheumatology consultant. All the best!
