Hi,

Depakine (also known as valproate) is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder. Joint and muscle pain are known side effects of Depakine, although they are relatively uncommon.

If your mother is experiencing severe muscle and joint pain that is interfering with her ability to walk and stand, it is important to seek medical attention. Her symptoms may be related to Depakine, but other conditions could also be causing her pain.

It is not recommended to abruptly stop taking Depakine without medical supervision, as this could lead to seizures or other serious complications. If you are concerned about the side effects of Depakine, you should speak with your mother's healthcare provider to discuss alternative treatment options.

In the meantime, your mother could try using over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to manage her pain. She may also benefit from rest, ice, and gentle stretching exercises. However, it is important to remember that these measures are not a substitute for medical evaluation and treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
