Hi Doctor. I am 51 married with 4 children. I've had Diabetes Type II since 2009. Managed to get control my sugar levels at 6 to 6.5 since then. Lately I have period cramps 1-2 days after first blood sighting. I am daily on Metformin, Glicazide, Lovastatin, Amlodipine 1 each. I am trying to understand the correlation between my diabetic condition and menstrual cramps. I would also like to prevent the cramps. Thank you.
Hello there, Good to know that your diabetes is under control. It would have helped if you had done a fasting and post meal sugar level. Now to answer your question, No the menstrual cramps you are suffering from are not because of diabetes. One of the reasons for these cramps could be that you are around menopausal age. To evaluate the cause you need to visit a gynaecologist who can examine you and suggest any blood tests like CBC, Thyroid functions, and Ultrasonography if needed. Blood sugar control can be difficult around the perimenopausal age. So be careful about your diet and try to have a diet rich in fibre and fresh vegetables. Try to include at least 45 minutes of exercise per day if your health permits. Continue you medicines as of now. If I were to treat you for the cramps I would give you a meftal spas after food when there is pain. It will also help if you use a hot water bag for local relief of pain. Hope this helps. Take care.
