Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have tapered down to 25mg of Imuran from 200 mg. I would really like to stop taking this medication but very fearful of a flare up. \I have been on Imuran for about 11 years with mild side effects. Is there something i could take naturally as an alternative such as fish oil or even a safer drug? Thank you
NO, there is NOT a naturally occuring herbal for chemotherapy thank God! Imuran works by killing off immune cells. It is highly controlled to give a very predictable amount in each pill. There is no tea, no flavoring, no plant based material I have ever experienced that doesn't vary at least 50% one time to another. That amount of variation in a drug that kills off cells would certainly be fatal. Whatever it would be used for would have to be a potentially fatal disease. The exchange for MILD side effects is quite a good one. Imuran with good guidance and dosing actually mostly has mild side effects, but it is a very hazardous medicine. With low doses, the toxicity is certainly less than at high doses.
