Does Discontinuing Thyroid Pills Cause Lumps In The Thyroid?

I was wondering if that when I stopped taking my thyroid pills a low dose of 0.075mg, could of caused me to have a lump on the right side of my thyroid? I have had the lump for almost two years. I stopped taking them two years ago due to the fact that I do not have insurance, and I could no longer pay for my blood work. I have been having symptoms of severe hair loss, extreme tiredness, I can not remember things and I also have a very weak feeling in my legs when I walk a short distance.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are actually having symptoms of Hypothyroidism and in my opinion this is the result of discontinuing your thyroid pill. I deduce that your thyroid pill is Levothyroxine. It is used to treat or prevent an enlarged thyroid gland. So, discontinuing this medication can produce an increase in the size of the thyroid above normal thyroid gland or diffuse goitre. But you have a lump only on the right side of your thyroid and this is not a typical event of discontinuing Levothyroxine. So,my advice is to do the thyroid tests TSH, fT3, and fT4 and an thyroid ultrasound to confirm Hypothyroidism and to see "what" is the lump on your right side of the thyroid gland. I suggest to consult physically your local endocrinologist for the tests (hormone tests and ultrasound of the thyroid), the treatment and the follow up of your thyroid condition.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo
