Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it possible that a person who has been on a low carb diet losing weight rapidly can go off for 17 days eating a lot of carbs and gain nearly 50 pounds of fat back? Also, legs are very swollen and exercise was neglected for those 17 days when the person had been working our for 11/2 hours with cardio/weight training each day. Is a lot of this water weight? Dangerous? Will it start to go back down with low carb and exercise?
That degree of weight gain over such a short period suggests this is due to water retention and not carbohydrates or not exercising. Water weight this great could be caused by something that is dangerous. This person needs to be checked promptly by their doctor. Swelling like this could be from heart failure, liver disease, kidney problems, or other major organ dysfunction. You need to find out what is causing it and get it appropriately treated. Sometimes losing weight TOO quickly can upset the metabolism and cause problems. Get this person to their doctor soon to figure out what the problem is. Hope this helps.
