Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am getting lots of nutritional advice that are at odds. Most recently, I have seen advice that the low fat foods craze was both un-necessary and contra indicated. Nonetheless, many sources (such as this one just today) continue to advise me that healthy living requires a low-fat diet. What gives on the inconsistent understanding?
There is a difference between having foods touted as "low fat" and having a diet which is low in fat. Foods touted as 'low fat" may not be nutritious and are often marketed to target health-conscious or rather calorie conscious people. But having a diet which is well-balanced and low in fat is actually the healthy way to eat. A diet includes a variety of foods which maybe low in fat but rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, fibre and starch. Do you understand the difference??? Low fat foods means mostly packaged foods touted as low in fat like baked cookies which might be low in fat but high in sugar! I hope you have now understood the difference between the two and have a more clear picture of what is just a marketing gimmick and what are healthy eating guidelines.
