Does Increasing Metformin Dosage Cause Constipation?

Hi, I recently doubled my metformin from 1000mg to 2000mg per day. Now I am sometimes constipated and, occasionally after a bowel movement, I have a little surface blood in my stool and I feel a little light-headed and feel nauseous afterwards...but no vomiting. Is this normal and temporary for the increased dosage?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Metformin less likely causes constipation in fact in some people it may cause diarrhea.

Constipation in your condition may be due to diabetes or low fiber I take.

Blood in stools also may be due to hard stools and constipation lead to pressure along the rectum lead to hemorrhoids.

Take high fiber diet, use syrp Lactulose.

Please consult your doctor, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
