Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My dad is 88 years old and recently started dialysis. I notice he starts to hallucinate after dialysis and this has lasted a couple of days. He was admitted to hospital for a blood infection the last time he started hallucinating, but now, he has started back up and the hospital says he does not have a blood infection. He see things that are not there and hears things. When he is not hallucinating he is on point , no dementia. He can t seem to function when he hallucinates, can t eat properly, misses his mouth, and is out of it . Can dialysis cause this?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per my clinical experience, the dialysis can not give rise to hallucination, but it is the underlying hormone changes with central nervous system effect , alterations in electrolytes post procedure that can precipitate such events.
Hope I have answered your query.
