Does Long Term Nuvaring Use Affect Pregnancy?

HI I have been on the nuva ring for about 4 years. I took it out about two months ago trying to get pregnant. My cycle came on around the first of this month and only stayed on for two days. I had sex on the 13th of this month could i be pregnant? Or how long does it take to get pregnant being that I was on the nuva ring for so long?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The Nuvaring is out of your system within days of removing it, so no matter how long you have used it in the past, your normal ovulatory cycle should resume within a month. You may not have regular periods right away, especially if your period was not regular before you started using hormonal contraception, but you theoretically should be able to conceive. The fact that you bled at all is a good sign that your own hormones are beginning to work again.

However, I encourage you to be patient, because 80 percent of couples will conceive within a year, which gives you an approximately 6 percent chance per cycle of conceiving if you are having regular, unprotected intercourse. Generally, regular intercourse means having sex at least every other to every third day (as sperm live in the genital tract for up to 72 hours) from the time your period finishes until you start to feel PMS symptoms (which means you are either due to get your period or are already pregnant). If your period is late (meaning no bleeding at all) then I would recommend doing an over-the-counter pregnancy test.

So there is no reason to worry about your ability to conceive after long-term use of the Nuvaring. I encourage you to eat a healthy diet, get lots of rest, and begin to take a prenatal vitamin supplement to help prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
