Does Medication For Seizures Elevate The Liver Enzymes?
Hi, My son has a seizure disorder due to a TBI, he is taking Keppra, and we just added trileptal in July to control the seizures. We just received the results of his blood tests and found that his liver enzymes are elevated to 41 (they said 35 is normal). Is this a typical result of the medications? Or could something else be going on? How serious is this?
Hello, I understand your concern. Keppra does not elevate the liver enzymes as most of it is metabolized elsewhere. Trileptal is metabolized in the liver and can produce modest liver enzyme elevation usually less than 2 times the normal values. The present value of 41 is not of concern but it may be checked again in a couple of weeks. If it is going up, then other causes like a viral infection will have to be considered. Don't have to worry about the present value and is reversible. But do not stop the medicine without the consent of the doctor. Wish your son good health. If you have further queries,I am available to answer Dr. Noble Zachariah. If you find this answer helpful, please indicate the same to guide others with similar queries. Thanks
