Good evening, I have a TSH of 8.67, I am 16 weeks pregnant. I got my blood test done at 5 weeks and my Dr. just told me today. He put me on leroxyl? without any further testing and acted like it was no big deal. I guess I need to know, should I not be concerned and trust my Dr. or should I get a second opinion?
According to recent literature normal TSH levels in pregnancy should be lower than 2.50 mIU/L during the first trimester and bellow 3.0 mIU/L during the last 2 trimesters. In your case the use of supplementary levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) is warranted not only because you are Hypothyroid but because the fetus needs normal thyroid hormone levels for his/her correct neuro-development. Testing should be done serially to make sure your levels fall bellow 3.0 mIU/L. You should get a second opinion
