Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I just got my cartilage pierced and it is very red and it hurts. I have swim season coming up in high school and was thinking about numbing it during then so Ill be able to swim with no ear pain. By putting numbing cream on will it infect the area or bother the piercing more?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Topical anesthetics help numb the pain of minor procedures. It is unlikely to cause any secondary infection but swimming itself may cause infection due to contact with water,as it seems still raw.It is advised to apply topical antibiotic cream e.g. soframycin or Mupirocin (Pseudomonic Acid A)and allow it to heal completely before you start your swimming session.
