Does Partial Thyroid Removal Cause Hair Loss And Splitting Of Nails?
I had a partial thyroid removal. Since that time, I have experienced loss of eye lashes, then a few years ago, my nails have separated from the nail beds and most recently I have had significant hair loss. Would all these experiences and changes in my body be related to the thyroid?
Hi, I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns. If a such a clinical scenario arise in my practice I would first do a TFT ( Thyroid Function Test) to evaluate thyroid hormone status, because both hypothyroidism( low thyroid hormone) and hyperthyroidism (high thyroid level) cause the symptoms you have mentioned. Hypothyroidism is a common cause of hair loss and loss of eye lashes which is a likely cause in your case.Hyperthyroidism cause nail changes termed as "thyroid acropchy" but very unlikely in your case. I suggest you to consult a physician or an endocrinologist for detailed evaluation, which include TFT and sometime a dermatology consultation to evaluate nail changes. Hope this information helps. Feel free to contact if you have any further queries.
