Does Severe Symptoms Of Vertigo Require Urgent Medical Attention?
31 year old female, about 5ft 8in and 150 pounds, nothing significant in my medical history - I have been sober for the last five years (if that makes a difference). I m having pretty severe symptoms of vertigo, over the last 6wks or so I d have minor symptoms, but starting this past the symptoms have gotten worse, i have them all at the same time and they usually sort of fade in and fade out. Now when the nausea or pain in the back of my neck or the headache subsides, they don t/haven t lessened much..just a slight lessening. Question: should i go to emergency room?!?!
Vertigo can be generally caused by peripheral or central causes. Peripheral vertigo is mostly caused due to ear problems whereas central vertigo is caused due to problems in the brain, eg : cerebellum, CVJ anomaly( may be associated neck pain). You will need a detailed clinical examination with or without imaging to rule out whether it is a central cause(which may require an emergency CT or MRI scan to rule out the underlying pathology) or a peripheral cause. If your symptoms are worsening, attend an Emergency or if symptoms are static, consult an ENT specialist or a Neurologist for further management.
