Does Smoking And Drinking Effect Nexplanon Medication?

Does smoking and drinking effect nexplanon? I am considering getting nexplanon for my periods and, obviously, to prevent pregnacy. I only smoke on rare occasion, but I m just curious if it will cause the nexplanon to be ineffective. I do drink every weekend, not heavily.

Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the efficacy of Nexplanon.

The efficacy of Nexplanon (Etonogestrel) a hormonal preparation intended to be used as a contraceptive (birth control) implant will be reduced by both smoking and alcohol intake and hence pregnancy can occur despite of using the implant.

Both alcohol and smoking are known to enhance the metabolism (clearance from the body) of Etonorgestrel hence it will not effective if used along with smoking and alcohol intake.

You may have to use an alternate method of contraception (birth control) like intrauterine contraceptive device if you want to continue smoking and alcohol intake or else avoid smoking and alcohol which will be much more beneficial on the long run.

Hope to have answered your query.
