hi My brother is having a aortic valve replacement and will probably be on blood thinners. Apparently he s been smoking pot for years- he s 46 and started in his teens. I would assume he needs to stop smoking, isn t that right? Also, he has a 70% blockage in an artery, would that have been caused from smoking pot?
Cannabis (pot) is a reasonable risk factor for heart disease with increasing reports in literature of such complications associated with pot use. Pot is associated with heart attack in young adults. The fact that it is the most widely used illicit substance especially for recreational purpose its harmful effects are often minimised and ignored by physicians. Its advisable for your brother to stop using pot. Also smoking pot may interfere with the medications that he is taking. So do discuss this with your cardiologist.
