Does Strenuous Walking Cause Strain A Muscle?

Is it possible to strain a muscle by strenuous walking? I have pain and tightness in inner right thigh/knee--I walked 4 miles on pebble gravel in well broken-in (7-year-old) hiking shoes. I m not very active normally. Have shin splints and have spained the other ankle previously but never experienced anything like this. Looking at diagrams I think it might be my sartorius muscle--the pain is in the same exact spot. It hurts more during the action of bending and lifting my knee, particularly going up stairs. Any idea what could be going on and how to treat it?
