Recently, during my annual physical exam, I had two different blood tests that indicated I have hyperthyroidism. My physician wants to me to take a radioiodine test in the next few weeks. Would there be any chance that this elevated level was caused by stress and a recent sinus infection?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and makes excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is the autoimmune disorder Graves’ disease. Hyperthyroidism also may be caused by a toxic nodular or multinodular goiter, which are lumps or nodules in the thyroid gland that cause the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. At the other side i can say that even the inflammation of the thyroid gland—called thyroiditis—resulting from a virus or a problem with the immune system may temporarily cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism. The thyroid ultrasound and the radioiodine test(thyroid scan and uptake) can give more information about the exact cause of your hyperthyroidism. The elevated thyroid hormone levels can not be caused by stress. If your recent sinus infection was a viral infection, than the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis is possible. Anyway as I said the radioiodine test and the thyroid ultrasound will be very helpful to reach the definitive diagnosis and to have the right treatment, accordingly.
