Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Medicare requires I take a full prescription of amoxicillin (875mg 2x a day for 28 days) prior to having a CT scan. I worry that it will affect my resistance and cause side effects (I am prone to vaginal yeast infections). Am I right to be concerned?
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria and treat many different types of infection caused by bacteria. But it might be responsible for killing the beneficial bacteria existing in the vaginal flora, those bacteria help keep other organisms-like the yeast-under control. The killing of those bacterias will be responsible for losing of that balance and as a consequence the yeast will grow faster and cause vaginal itching or discharge.
For the other side effects of amoxicillin: -Allergic reaction -Stomach pain, diarrhoea -Nausea, vomiting -Headache -Swollen, black, or hairy tongue.
But we should take in consideration the benefits/risk relationship, if the benefits of taking amoxicillin more than their risks as evaluated by your doctor you should take the full prescription.
Hope I answered your questions Wishing you a speedy recovery Best regards Dr. Noor Farid
