Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Taking Atenolol, Tambocor Or Aspirin Cause False Positive Drug Test Results?
I am going to do a Medical assessment for a job interview. They will be testing me for urine drug screen and a breath alcohol test. I currently take daily atenolol 50mg and Tambocor 50mg and aspirin for artrifibulation. Will the both of the medication show up in the urine test? I don’t want to disclose this medication in case it decreases my chance of getting the job I want. Any information you provide would be appreciated.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
These are not common for cross reaction and certainly retesting with a better test would rule out these particular drugs as false positive.
But, below scenarios can give false positive test results: 1) Having the urine sit and ferment causes false positives for alcohol. 2) Other things you wouldn't think about like hand sanitizer with alcohol in it gets absorbed and cause false positive for alcohol. 3) Most false positives we don't find the cause for it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Matt Wachsman
