Does Taking Cytotec After Its Expiration Date Cause An Unsuccessful Abortion?
Hello. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and took Cytotec in the 6th week and to this day I have not bled, only cramps here and there. Also, I noticed the expiry date said May 2018 so is it possible that this is reason why the termination was unsuccessful? And could my baby be at any risk if I decided to keep him/her?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
To answer your question some more details are needed like : How many tablets of cytotec taken, with or without mefipristone. In which route, oral or vaginal Ultrasound for confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy and gestational age was done or not. Sometimes expired medicine also can have some potency. Fetus exposed to misoprostol may have the possibility of anomalies in 1:1000 ratio, which is comparatively low. If you want to continue the pregnancy, you need regular antenatal check ups and ultrasound examinations to monitor the well-being of the baby. Especially ultrasound at 11 weeks and TIFFA scan at 20 weeks and quadruple test at around 18 weeks. With this workup the possibility of major anomalies can be ruled out as per as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
