Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a single seizure only and am 72 years old. (It was caused by an o.d. of Prednisone and too rapid withdrawal. I ve never been epileptic.) In hospital, I was given 2,000 mg/day ongoing of Keppra (Levitiracetam) and within days developed APHASIA. I had to wean myself off of it due to lack of medical cooperation in doing so. (I wound up angry!!) Then the neurologist wanted to give me Lamictal. I got a bad feeling, said NO, and now I read that Lamictal can also cause APHASIA for some patients. Is that true? And what is your opinion of a 2,000 mg/day dose of Keppra to start for an elderly patient? Thank you.
In your case, an important part is a seizure and underlying cause of it needs to be found out. Now for the line of treatment, it may remain the same Benzodiazepine group of the drug is widely given and this drug may not cause the aphasia. Even other drugs that are being given for seizure may not cause the aphasia, and cause of this could be something else.
Even if this is the elderly patient disease matters the great and it has to be treated accordingly although 2000 mg per day in divided dose can be given depends upon the clinical condition patient has.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain,
