Does Taking Zyrtec Prevent Itching Around A Rash Caused By Poison Ivy?

Have what I think is poison ivy, oak after a walk in my moms back yard but I've experienced no itching. My brother got poision ivy a week before me from the yard but his was very itchy. I've been taking Zyrtec for a couple of weeks. Could this be why my rash does not itch?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Cetirizine is an oral antihistamine. Since histamine is the mediator of the itch response in an allergic reaction to poison ivy. So, lack of itching could be because the oral antihistamine is blocking the receptors where histamine acts and elicits itch. I suggest you continue with the Cetirizine tab. In addition, I suggest you use a soothing lotion e.g calamine lotion on the affected area.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
