Does Taking An Iodine Supplement After Thyroid Removal Cause Any Adverse Side Effects?

Hi there, In 2005 I had half of my thyroid gland removed due to hyperthyroidism. I have lost a fair bit of hair due to this. I had very thick hair and now I have fairly thin hair with a bald spot on top of my head. The surgeon that did the procedure told me that I didn’t have to take an iodine supplement. However, I was thinking of taking one to see if any of my hair would return. I’m wondering if there would be any adverse health effects to this that I should be concerned with?Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Iodine using in early stage act as a increase t3,t4 level if the dose will increase then it will inhibit hormone release. Now check what is the status of your TSH, t3,t4 . Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
