Does The Length Of Nasal Bone Alone Can Be A Marker For Down S Syndrome?
Hi, My wife is 18+ weeks pregnant. We found that during the first trimister scan nasal bone was absent. We did a blood test for down s syndrome and found out that the risk is lower, 1/14336. During the second trimister scan 18+ weeks we found that hypoplastic nasal bone. The lenght of the nasal bone was 3.8 mm for which the radiologist and the doctor asked us to go for amniocentesis to rule out the down s. All other parameters are normal except the nasal bone length. We are in two minds to go for amnio due to the risk associated with it. Does the length of nasal bone alone can be a marker for Downs? Please advise.
The length of the nasal bone alone cannot be a specific marker or indication for Down syndrome, but it can raise doubt which should be confirmed with an smniocentesis. I would strongly recommend the amniocentesis.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.
