Does Thyroid Dysfunction Cause Elevated Blood Pressure Levels?

I HAD AN ISSUE WITH MY BLOOD PRESSURE BEING HIGH LAST WEEK, IT IS THE 1ST TIME TO EXPERIENCE IT . MY DR . DID BLOOD WORK EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL BUT THE THYROID FUNCTION WAS EXTREMLY LOW BOARDING ON THE NOT IN NORMAL RANGE. CAN THE THYROID CAUSE B/P ISSUES?

Yes, thyroid dysfunction causes change in blood pressure. Both hyperfunctioning and undergunctioning thyroid gland may cause changes in blood pressure. When thyroid hormones are produced in excess they cause stronger heart contractions, increase heart rate and increased the amount of blood that the heart pumps into the blood vessels. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormones) changes heart function in an opposite manner. Therefore, both of the conditions have their effect on blood pressure. Treating thyroid disorder usually normalizes blood pressure.

Yes, thyroid pathologies may be associated with alterations of blood pressure, but more commonly hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid causes high blood pressure. Very rarely hypothyrodism causes high blood pressure.
