Does Ulcerative Colitis Cause Bleeding And A Metal Taste In The Mouth?
My son who is 45 has Ulcerative Colitis and is waiting for insurance to approve the Biologic, Simponi, but he has lost 30 pounds in the last month because he isn t eating much at all, and he s bleeding alot. He is very pale, and is complaining of a metal taste in his mouth. He is very weak and dizzy and the last few days has spent almost of his time in bed. This is a guy that never complains and is never sick. Should I take him to the ER? Do you think he could be anemic?
Warm welcome to Healthcaremagic.com I have evaluated your query thoroughly .
* Ulcerative colitis directly is not responsible for the bleeding in mouth but it may be secondary from the deficiency of vitamin c or other clotting factors .
* Metallic mouth definitely can be a part of colitis with reflux of stomach acid .
* He is anemic as per the narration , requires ER visit .
Hope this will help you . Welcome for any further assistance .
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Ulcerative colitis can give rise to many complications like your son has developed. It can cause bleeding, perforation, adhesions, malnutrition and so on. Hence you should take him to ER for preliminary investigations, get admitted for replacement of fluids and electrolytes, the proteins and so on like parenteral nutrition is needed. He may need colectomy if the medical treatment fails to give response and cause betterment. Detailed investigations like CT scan of abdomen, colonoscopy, biopsy and tests of stool, blood are necessary to know the exact position so that supplements can be given according to the reports and gets relief too.
