Does Valparin Cause Behavioral Changes?

My son aged 16 years took valparin 20 mg tabs from age of 7 to 12yrs (5 years) daily one tab. After that we notice he started irritated with his brothers, and demanding some thing from parents. It slowly increased; we are consulting with psychiatrist and taking medicine since last one year. Now he is mostly sleeping, not having any friend, stopped to attain school. Not at all studying since last 50 days, discontinued his private tuition. Demanding to change school. What type of treatment he needs, kindly guide. Is it a side effect of Valparine medicine?

Hello,

Your son is taking Valparin 20mg for a long time. Valparin (sodium valproate) is a medication used primarily as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. As every medicine Valparin has also some side effects, including irritability and aggression. However, it is difficult to say for sure if your son's symptoms are directly caused by Valparin.

It's essential to continue consulting with your psychiatrist to understand your son's condition better and determine the most appropriate treatment plan. The doctor may consider adjusting or changing medications, conducting further evaluations to identify any underlying conditions, and providing counseling or therapy.

In addition to medication, your son may benefit from behavioral interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or family therapy. These can help address his social and academic difficulties and improve his overall functioning. It's crucial to prioritize your son's mental health and wellbeing and work with his healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses his unique need.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
