Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Weaning Off Metoprolol Cause Any Side Effects?
I am currently being weaned off of metoprolol. Initially, I was taking 50 milligrams a day. My doctor is suggesting 6 weeks method. He told me to just cut the pill in half to (25 mil.) and to take it for 2 weeks. Then I should take it every other day for 2 weeks. Im assuming its 25 mil. On the 5th week, and 6 week, how should I take it before stopping completely.
There are no strict rules regarding weaning off metoprolol and every doctor has one's own preferred method. Your doctor's method sounds OK for extended release formulations.
For the last couple of weeks you can cut the pill in four pieces and take only one of them every other day but I think that even trying to stop it completely shouldn't be causing any trouble at that point.
12.5mg every other day is already a low dosage and 6 weeks is a long time for tapering beta blockers but keep in mind that your doctor is the one who knows your complete history and your current medical status.
Therefore - the most appropriate person to decide things about your treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
