i am 66 with an itchy major and minora lips--not the vagina ay all---seems dry and sitting feels like it's cracking but the feeling from my fingers is smooth but very sore to touch and i itch by pressing hard against it rather than rubbing

From history it seems that you might be having vaginitis due to dry vagina.
Due to low estrogen level one can get dry vagina in menopasuasl age.
Local application of estrogen cream will be much helpful.
Consult gynaec and get examined.
