Dry Patch Of Skin Above Ankles, Bleeds When Scratched, Tried Many Treatments. Advise

Hello.

I have a very dry patch of skin above both of my ankles. They are extremely itchy to the point that they bleed when I scratch them. Even once they stop itching, the dry patches do not disappear. I have tried various creams/lotions/cortisone, etc and nothing has helped. Also, new spots keep appearing. Should I be concerned?

Hi
Thanks for your query

You seem to have developed Neurodermatitis involving the ankles.
Now this is an eczematous skin disease which is caused due to excessive itching of the skin.
First of all, you have to avoid itching of the affected area. Any kind of scratching of the area leads to increase in the skin lesions and also causes recurrence of the lesions after healing.
The best thing to do is to try and divert your attention to something else whenever you have itching.
Also can put a cloth dipped in cold water whenever you have this intense itching sensation.
Application of oil over the lesion to keep it moist also helps in pertaining itching.
You should apply a potent topical steroid cream like clobetasol over the affected area atleast twice a day till the time the skin lesions completely heal .
In addition, use a good moisturizer over the affected area.

Hope it helps
