Excessive Loose Stools After Taking Nitrofur-macr. How Long Will The Side Effect Continue?

I took nitrofur-macr for the first time last week for 5 days due to a urinary trac infection. About 2 days in to this I started having excessive and loose stools and this has continued even after I have finished the antibiotic. How long does this medication stay in your system and how long can this side effect continue?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
These loose stools could be due to side effect of NITROFUR- MACR .
This can happen due to pseudomembranous colitis caused by CLOSRIDIUM DIFFICILE infection.
Diagnosis of C.DIFFICILE can be done by PCR test.
Treatment involves use of metronidazole and probiotics.
Sometimes severe diarrheas may occur and then VANCOMYCIN is the drug of choice.
Thanks
