Experiencing Numbness In Face After A Double Masectomy
i had double masectomy over 2 weeks ago and we i woke up after surgery my face was numb bilaterally and 2 weeks post op it is still numb and hurt when i chew my jaw feels really thick. First doc said it was probably anethesia. now they don t think it is related to any problem related to surgery
I can understand your concern. Your doctor is right that usually breast surgery has no relation with jaw numbness as the surgery must have been done under general anesthesia. However, as you are having this numbing in jaw feeling right after the surgery, I would assume it as paresthesia (prolonged anesthesia) which is a usual complication followed by anesthesia.
If it is paresthesia, then it will take few weeks to few months' time to resolve on its own. Meanwhile, you can massage the jaws and cheeks and do opening and closing jaw exercises to get the sensations back soon.
I would also advise you to have an appointment with oral and maxillofacial surgeon to examine the jaws physically and rule out any other reason for the problem that might be co-incidental with the surgery.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
