Exposed To Heavy Dose Of Sunlight, Sunburn, Affected Area Seems To Be Rough To Touch. Suggestions?

Hello doctor. :) At the end of the summer in 2012, I ve been exposed to sunlight in a somewhat heavy dose for an hour, maybe more, at the seaside. I had a bad sunburn on the upper back and shoulder area and had blisters as the aftereffect and it hurt for a couple of days and the affected area of the skin was rougher to the touch than normal. I used yogurt and sour milk( cold ) to treat the burnt area and the worst passed within those few days and the old skin had fallen of. Since then I had a decent amount of sunburn freckles appear on that area that was burnt, but it decreased over time and now i have half less of them and they are all light brownish and a number of them faded away over time. Since i don t have(never had) fair/ sensitive skin and never had a sunburn this bad in my life(I m 21 now, was 21 also when the sunburn happened),and no cases of melanoma or any skin problems in the family,I m curious and want to hear your opinion on what s going on with my skin at this moment, since i believe I ve gave you detailed explanation and what my affected area looks like now,and your advice...?! Thanks in advance. :)

Hi ,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for writing in.
the condition you are describing can be freckles or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Avoid further sunexposure.
Apply hydroquinone based preparation at night.
A visit to dermatologist will allow confirmation of diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
Hope this helps.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query
There's no fast-fix sunburn treatment. Once you have sunburn, the damage is done — although it may take 12 to 24 hours after sun exposure to know the full extent and severity of sunburn.
If blisters form, don't break them. You'll only slow the healing process and increase the risk of infection. If needed, lightly cover blisters with gauze.
While your skin is peeling, continue to use moisturizing cream.
To prevent future episodes of sunburn, use sunscreen frequently and liberally.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.

hi , you have already got an answer to your query. i will like to add something.
our body can get sensitised to sunrays as we age so to the extent that even two minutes of sun exposure can be harmful.
this can happen even if we are on photosensitive medicine or having chemical peels done.
sunrays are intensified due to multiple reflections on hills, sandy areas, seaside, beaches and cloudy days . so whenever you visit these areas use sunscreen with high spf 50+. repeat it every 3-4 hours during the day. waterproof sunscreens in water or rain.
use moisturiser to decrease the roughness.
since it is more than a month now. you can get chemical peeling done and use hydroquinone cream at night.
hope this will help you
