Hello & welcome,
A filling in the carious tooth is the restorative material which is put in the cavity cleaned by dentist to restore the tooth to its normal shape & functionality.
Sweets consumption without proper cleaning habits usually lead to development of caries in teeth which depending upon severity of destruction can be treated with different filling material after being cleaned by dentist.
Most used filling in old days were silver fillings, but now more tooth colored restorative materials are available which are more aesthetic compared to conventional silver filling material.
You should definitely go for tooth cleaning & filling procedure asked by your dentist as delaying the same would create more severe problems in future.
Proper cleaning habits are of utmost important in your case to avoid further development of caries.

Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. Dentist first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.

There are different filling materials :-
Gold filling
Amalgam filling
Composite filling
Porcelain filling

No,one type of filling is best for everyone. What's right for you will be determined by the extent of the repair, whether you have allergies to certain materials, where in your mouth the filling is needed, and the cost.

Hope I have answered your query.

Wishing you good health.

Regards.

Hello
Welcome to HCM
I would like to tell you that excessive intake of sticky sugar & improper oral hygiene results in decay of tooth due to acid production by bacteria. This process results in production of cavity which can be treated at different levels.
-If its initial caries then go for restoration
-If its at junction of pulp & dentin then go for indirect pulp-capping
-If it involves pulp then go for RCT
You need to go for proper diagnosis before that.
Restorative materials available are:-
-Aesthetic- GIC & Composite
-Anaesthetic-Amalgam
Go a head with treatment.

Take Care

hello,
your dentist is absolutely right.taking painkillers is not a permanent solution for pain due to dental carries.
the decayed teeth has to be filled or restored.
in this procedure, the decayed portion is excavated using spoon excavator if it is soft.if the deacay is hard, airotor handpiece with bur can be used for removing carries.
then place calcium hydroxide paste or dycal in the pulpal floor to enhance reparative dentin formation.zinc-phosphate cement is placed over it in a layer.sailver amalgam or composite or glass ionomer is placed on top, depending in patient's esthetic needs.
also check for high points.

Dentist Dr. Geoffrey Ward's  Response
Hello and thank you for your question.
When you have a cavity in your tooth, this is a hole that has been eaten in by bacteria that produces acids. The dentist drills into the tooth and removed the acid eaten and infected parts of the tooth. The holes are then repaired with a silver or white colored material depending on location, extent of disease, age and location you are at. These materials are called fillings because they fill the hole where your tooth once was and there the material now is. Pot holes get filled to prevent the holes from causing damage to cars, holes in teeth get filled so you can chew on them and to protect them from being more prone to future decay.

Dr. Ward

After taking out all the infected & decayed part of your tooth, a dentist restores it back to proper form & function, using certain materials like Silver Amalgam, Composite, GIC etc. These materials when used to build up the decayed tooth are called fillings. You are advised to get them done.

"Filling", here means removing the rotten and affected part of the teeth, and repacing it with a suitable tooth-filling material, like Dental Amalgam, Dental cements, and Dental composites.
Now if you have pain in your teeth too, then that means that the caries is quite deep, and you might need RCTs with Tooth-Cappings.
You would be well adviced to follow your Dentist's advice, get get the treatement ASAP.

hello,
once you find a decay (black colour line or pit) initially without any symptom , visit a dentist and get it filled with tooth coloured cement or silver amalgam as you wish. but when it gets deeper and hurts then it indicates infection has reached your tooth's pulp region (where blood vessel and nerves for the tooth are located) so now root canal treatment will be required assesing with a xray of respective tooth. treat your dental problems initially and visit your dentist once in six months. after eating sweets give a good gargle or even a brushing helps you not getting decayed tooth. take care.

Dentist, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Manish Gupta's  Response
Hello,

In filling or restoration the decayed tooth structure is removed and replaced with a filling material like dental cement or silver amalgam or tooth coloured fillings. But as you have pain in them so this indicates that the caries is deep and may need a root canal treatment. So i would suggest you to go for an X ray of the tooth to see the extent of caries. So visit your dentist asap.

Take care!

Hi, a filling or restoration is done to replace the lost tooth structure. The decayed tooth structure is removed and replaced with a dental cement or silver amalgam. These days tooth coloured fillings are available. But i would suggest you to go for an X ray of the tooth to see the extent of caries. Once the tooth starts paining, the caries is usually deep and may need a root canal treatment. Please discuss the treatment plan with your dentist. Take care!
