Fractured Hip. Pins Inserted, Getting Therapy. Severe Pain, Pins Found Loose In X-ray, Removed, Using Walker. Solution?

I fractured my hip in Oct. 2012 but because of Hurricane Sandy was not operated on until the second week inNovember. I had 3 pins put in and was in rehab until week before Christmas. I was getting therapy at home until Feb. The pain was so bad I went back to my Primary dr who took Xrays and found the pins were loose. The hop doctor took the pins out in August 27th. I am using as walker and at times the wheel chair. My pain is getting increaseingly worst now since I had the pins removed in Sept. Shouldn"t I start being able to walk without help and feel no pain? Also I lost 4 centermeters in my leg. Could this be a factor? I am 82 years old.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi, thanks for the question.

you may had collapsed in the fractured hip which can explain your symptoms.

you need repeat x-ray and possibly further hip surgery, depending on the results of x-ray and clinical examination.

best wishes

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description and your symptoms, I suspect either Infection in the joint or arthritic changes in your hip joint as the cause of severe pain.

Also, your shortening of the limb might also be contributing to the muscular pain around the hip joint. A detailed physical examination and Hematological investigations are necessary to establish the possible cause of your pain.

A total hip replacement will be a better choice for you which will relieve off your pain and also restores your limb length.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
