Frequent Urination, Weight Gain, Itching In The Feet. Normal Blood Test Report. Any Suggestions?

Hi I am a 68 year old woman- since I was 40 I have gained about 40 kg. I wake abouty 5 times every night and need to urinate ..my feet are itchy in the evening when I watch television - I don't have enough energy to do the things I need to do. I would like to feel healthier as I need to bring up my two teenage grandchildren with little support from anyone else. I have had my heart checked and had bloods checked - I feel I have lived with stress for a large part of my life and would like to make a radical change in my health. Any suggestions.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern, and for a 68-year-old woman, you have maintained yourself well enough.

Now coming to your query, your symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), especially during the night (nocturnal enuresis), along with itchy feet and generalized lethargy/weakness, all point towards diabetes. Although, this is just based on the information provided by you. I could be wrong, and a doctor might be able to diagnose a condition totally contradicting diabetes after a physical and laboratory examination, but as of now, I am suspecting diabetes.

You mentioned getting your blood parameters checked. I would advise a few more investigations, if you do not mind:
-Urine analysis (especially urine sugar)
-Glycemic profile (including FBS, PPBS, HbA1C)
-Doppler ultrasound of the lower extremities, after a physical examination for signs of any infection that could be causing the itching

I am sure we can find the cause at the earliest, and get you back on track to take care of your young grandchildren. Wishing you lots of luck and a long and beautiful life ahead.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
