Got Sun Burnt. Forehead Is Swollen And Tingly. Brown Marks On Shoulders. Remedy?

I was out in the sun for a long period of time but only applied sunscreen once, early in the morning. I got sunburned pretty bad and now my forehead is swollen and kind of tingly and I have these brown marks on my shoulders that look almost like freckles that I never noticed before. Are either one of these things related to the sunburn and if so, what should I do about it?

Hello,
Welcome to healthcaremagic
What you are having on your forehead could be sunburn. Avoid further sun exposure strictly. You can apply cold compresses frequently which will bring the damage down and will decrease pain and swelling. A topical steroid or a short course of oral steroids also will help but you need a prescription for that.
Freckle like brown marks on the shoulder could very well be freckles as freckles become prominent if you over expose to sunlight. Apply sunscreen with high spf, cover the area from sunlight. At night you can apply a lightening cream containing kojic acid so that it lightens.
Hope this helped,
Take care

Dermatologist Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kanodia's  Response
Hi Carolyn,
Welcome and thanks for posting your query to HCM.
Both of your problems (swollen forehead and mark on the shoulder) are related to excessive sun exposure. As you applied sunscreen only for one time which is quite insufficient to protect you from full day of sun exposure. On forehead the inflammation by sun damage lead to swelling and on shoulders is pigmentation which is a usual phenomenon of tanning and freckling.
Now for the remedy:
1.     Avoid further exposure to sunlight
2.     Do cold compressions over the affected part for multiple times day
3.     Apply calamine lotion over the areas where you fell more of burning
4.     If the areas are red or itching is present then can apply mild topical steroid and take oral antihistaminics under medical supervision.
In future whenever you are supposed to have more sun exposure, then do apply your sunscreen every 3 hourly.
With best wishes,
