Had A Stroke. Heart Surgery. On Trachesotomised Peg Tube Feeding, Glucerna. Help?

Hi I need a neurologist to answer my question. Two months back my father underwent an open heart surgery while he was unconscious on ventilator and suffered a stroke. It is bilateral with right side smaller infarct than left side. At two months he is semi-conscious, opens his eyes and looks at us, seems to listen, . He has been discharged and is being managed at home. He has also undergone pleural fluid aspiration three times till now. I wish to know is we can give any nutritional supplements like Omega 3 fatty acid and Acetyl L-carnitine, etc which can help boost blood supply to brain. Could you guide me if there are any known supplements that can help to improve his condition and if these are safe for him. He is also diabetic. We are giving him Glucerna SR diabetic powder along with small home feeds like soup, egg nog, etc. Also please let me know how I can procure these supplements in India and what should be the dose.

Hello
Thanks for posting your query
Few things I want to made you unerstand
1) Nutrition supplements directly do not participate in neurological recovery
2) Nutrition supplements are essential for prevention of malnutrition that can delay recover.(post stroke are prone for malnutrition)
3) Omega 3 fatty acid is immunonutition help to ARDS (lung disease), autoimmune diseasea and after cardiac surgery helps for recovery
5) pleural effusions frequently happens after cardiac surgery for few months and may be longer if heart funtion is poor (low EF) - medications which optimize heart functions will help to reduce pleural effusion
6) All standard brands of nutrition supplements are avaible in India very easily. Glucernais also available
7) you need to take care of PEG tube for leaking, infections and replacement with new tube depending upon tube you father has.
Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
Hope this helps, wish you and your dad the best health
