Had Cervical Cerclage Placed, Prescribed Azithromycing. Normal?

Good evening Doctor, I had a cervical cerclage placed about 11 days ago and my OB prescribed azithromycin 250mg (every other day) for the duration of my pregnancy in hopes of infection prevention due to the cerclage. Is this normal? Should I be concerned about taking antibiotics for such a long time? Are there any dangers associated with such long term use of azithromycin (hope I spelled it correctly)? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide...

Hi,
Thanks for the query.

Usually azithromycin tablets are prescribed for 3 or maximum of 5 days.
One course of tablets with daily 500mg to 1000mg for 3 days are usually sufficient after cervical cerclage.
For more details:http://www.medicinenet.com/azithromycin/article.htm
So you better once again verify about the prescription with your doctor.
If she again says the same better to go for second opinion from another local doctor.

Take care.
