Had Colonscopy, Poor Bowel Movement, Feels Swollen. Prescribed Probiotic, Fluconazole

I am a 52 year old female. I just saw my gynocologist yesterday and she said I don't need a PAP if I had one last year. Ever since I had colonscopy, my anus/bowel doesn't always work well in that if I have little poos, i have to "dig" them out. It feels swollen. She did not examine me, but prescribed a probiotic and Fluconazole (14 days 2x day). It just seems weird. Other than that I am healthy.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

A probiotic is prescribed for normalizing intestinal function by helping in formation of good bacteria. These bacteria multiply and bring back conditions required for the bowels to work properly. After colonoscopy, the inner lining of large bowel might get affected and your doctor has prescribed this keeping that in mind.

Fluconazole is an antifungal and helps in clearing fungal infections. You might be having fungal infection in your genital region. Probably that is the reason a PAP smear was not done. Taking fluconazole will cure you of your infection.

Please remember that it is best that your partner also gets treated with antifungals and you abstain from sex until your course of medications is complete.

Hope this helps
