Had Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removed. Taking Tylenol. Had Cold. Have Yellow Pus In Mouth, Foul Odor. What Is This?

Hi, I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed about 2 months ago. I am just getting over a bad head cold that has made the left side of my upper mouth kill. Tons of pressure, very uncomfortable. I ve been taking Tylenol at night which helps a little. Last night while laying in bed, I felt this insane amount of pressure, then almost like a birth of yellow/ green puss filled my mouth. This happened to more times. I m nervous but I don t want to rush to the dentist over every little thing. Oh also, it smelled terrible and tasted just as bad. I floss every day and brush twice a day. Am I broken? Should I run or walk to the dentist? Thank you for your time. Amysue

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

I would like to tell you that wisdom tooth extraction is not a simple extraction, it is somewhat a complicated procedure and there are many postoperative complications like pain, swelling, prolonged numbness, difficulty in mouth opening, fever, malaise.

You dont worry about the symptoms, headache can be due to use of antibiotics and painkillers prescribed to you.

Yellow liquid oozing out can be because of abscess formation there could be a chance of some broken tooth piece left in the socket to rule out this, Visit the concerned dentist and get a checkup done.

Follow the postoperative instructions given by the Dentist properly, take complete course of antibiotic and analgesic, take lukewarm saline gargles 3-4 times a day to give a soothing effect, use antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice to promote healing and prevent infection.

Hope this helps out.

Regards.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

The symptoms you experience are usually associated with post extraction of wisdom tooth.
The yellow pus is the draining of abscess underlying the infected impacted wisdom teeth which got extracted.
The socket has to be curetted and irrigated well using betadine and sodium hypochlorite solution.
Frequent warm saline gargle may be helpful.
Take complete course of antibiotics-analgesics.
Maintain good oral hygiene.
Dressing the socket using Iodoform/zoe may enhance wound healing.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
It's just the taste coming from the healing orifices where your wisdom teeth used to be. It's a natural part of the process. Definitely keep up with the salt water rinses and the antiseptic mouthwashes. Floss well in the backs of those molars next to where your wisdom teeth used to be. You'd be surprised at the amount of plaque that can build there, and bacteria from your healing mouth can gather there and hold that bad taste.
Hope this advice helps!
Wishing you good health...
Regards.

hello there ,

According to your history i can suspect after the extraction of the wisdom tooth some remnant of the tooth like root piece or infected tissue has left in the alveolar bone that has gone worse and you have developed a periodontal abscess.

The swelling you can notice is nothing but the abscess which may drain yellowish pus in the oral cavity and leads to pressure on the underlying structures.

This type of periodontal abscess needs to be drained and compressed in position and then followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesic will subside the symptoms of pain and swelling.

once the abscess is drained the infected root piece can be extracted .

you need to get an x ray done the affected area to confirm the presence of infection, approach a dentist for the treatment.

i hope this helps,

take care.

Hello there,

Thanks for the query.

The symptoms you experience are due to periodontal abscess in the affected area in your oral cavity.
If this swelling is in your extracted wisdom tooth region,it is your wisdom tooth remnant even after after extraction which got worse and you have developed periodontal abscess in the same region.
Treatment of periodontal abscess includes established drainage of pus and irrigation of the affected area.
Foul smell is due to pus present in your affected area.
Therefore i would suggest you consult with your dentist and get an x-ray done of the affected region to rule out the cause.
If there is a root piece in the affected area,it should be extracted after symptoms get subside.
Hope this relieves your symptoms.
Get well soon.

Dentist Dr. Khushboo Bhatia's  Response
During the period of formation of clot in the exposed extraction site of wisdom tooth and coupled with presence of bacteria in the mouth, one can have bad smell coming from there shortly after the surgery. Further this can be accompanied by bad tasting fluid seeping from extraction site. This bad smell and fluid can continue upto maximum 2 weeks after the surgery. All these increase the importance of follow up appointment with dentist . During this visit if the dentist feels that the infection has set in the extraction socket then he gently uses a plastic syringe without the hypodermic needle and fills it with a mixture of equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water or Chlorhexidine Gluconate which also comes in the form of a mouth wash, into the sockets to remove any food or bacteria that may have collected in the back of the mouth.

Hi,
Thanks for askinng query,
Wisdom tooth extraction is not a simple extraction it need a postextraction care and precaution. In your case it seems that might be some part of tooth remained in the socket or the socket after the extraction is not properly curetted.
You should go to the dentist and get it properly checked ,he will properly clean the socket give dressing, take proper antibiotic and analgesic course as prescribed by dentist and use antiseptic mouthwash for gargale.
