Had Prostate Cancer. Taken Steroid Injection. Done Surgery. Done Blood Test, Psa Dropped. What Is The Relationship?
My husband had prostate cancer surgery in Dec 2012 and his first check up after the surgery his psa results were a little higher than the doctor wanted and he repeated the psa test a few weeks later. The psa had dropped and has since then until this last week it came back .7 and he will have another blood test tomorrow. Since his surgery he has had a problem with his back and as a result has had three sets of steriod injections and ultimately surgery in late July to remove a small piece of verbrae that was compressing a nerve. Could the steriod injections play a role in the increase of psa.
Hi! welcome to HCM! No,steroid injections do not affect PSA levels PSA or Prostate-specific antigen, is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. The higher a man’s PSA level, the more likely it is that he has prostate cancer . In addition to prostate cancer, a number of benign (not cancerous) conditions can cause a man’s PSA level to rise. The most frequent are prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or a urinary tract infection. Your husband had a high PSA level due to prostate cancer and as soon as the surgery was done and cancer was removed level came back to normal. Now the fresh rise can be due to recurrence. If PSA level continues to rise or if a suspicious lump is detected during a DRE, the doctor may recommend imaging such as a transrectal ultrasound, x-rays, cystoscopy OR biopsy.
