Had Unprotected Vaginal Sex With HIV Positive Girl. Now My PCR Shows Undetectable And HIV AB Is 0.36. Is This Safe?
I mistakenly had unprotected vaginal sex with a girl that was positive for HIV AB (49.17) and after 14 days of the intercourse, I did PCR in test and result show UNDETECTABLE (detection limit 20/ml.)
I also did HIV Antibody text after 4Weeks of the exposure and the result is HIV AB 0.36, I need to know if the result is ok or not, because I was told that the PCR is the best accurate text so far. Help me out before my mind is not at rest.
The antibody result of 0.36 is considered as non reactive. But, the problem with HIV infections is that sometimes it takes more than 6 months for the antibodies to appear in the blood (known as "Window Period") During this Window Period, antibodies will not be detected in blood.
However, the tests like PCR & p24 assay are useful during this period. They become positive within a week and are almost 100 % sensitive. Even the presence of a single virus in the body can be detected by PCR. So, as this test has come negative (undetectable), you can be sure that you are safe.
Wishing you a good health. Take care.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vidya KR's Response
Thanks for using HCM As you have history of exposure, better screening test is ELISA, if its negative initially you need to repeat test again after 3 and 6 months of exposure.and PCR test is good one to test for virus, but takes some time to detect virus. You can consult a general physician for further management. Get well soon.
